Samsung Washing Machine Review (Model WA422PRHDWR)

2-Year Update: I’m not sure what to say to all those with negative experiences. Perhaps it’s just selection bias, where only those with broken machines bother to seek out reviews to comment on.

Nevertheless, our washer is still going strong with no issues. In a 7-person household with a baby and a bed-bound family member, we’ve produced a LOT of very dirty laundry. Never any problems with the cleaning performance.

The water level is determined automatically by the amount of wash you’re doing, and though it uses less water than older machines, it’s always enough to get the job done in our experience.

We love how fast the spin dry is, which saves time and energy used for the dryer. This largely makes up for the longer washing times of HE machines.

This washer i purchased doesn’t seem to fill not even half way with water, isn’t it supposed to fill up past the clothing to get the clothes wet and cleaned?? The wash cycle seemed to be barely moving, how is the clothes actually getting clean or is the washer just getting them wet? The soap suds just seem to stay on top, the clothes do not seem to move other than with the bowl and at the end of the wash cycles the same items are on top as when I originally stuck them into the washer! So what did the washer do for the 56 minutes, except barely wet the dirt (making mud), waste my valuable time and money and water, energy, soap, etc? oh and staining other clothes that were not stained prior to the wash!
Please bring back the good ol’ washers from the 80’s! Anyone agree with me? cant even see through the glass so why have it, but looks pretty great on the show room floor (the only place you can see through the glass)

54+ mins to wash clothes? >_> wow these washers are crap. normal top load washers only took like 20mins tops.

Nicole Orozco says:

it’s horrible flooded my house after 1 week and all my clothes smell like mold everytime I wear them

Ellen Marie Dumer says:

Terrible…leaves stains and dirt on my clothes. 15 months old, two repair calls already. One active and they are telling me they need a part…a week and a half without a washer. Going to let them fix it and buying a cheap new one with an agitator!

LesuresK9s says:

IT IS NOW 11:08 AND I HAVE TO GET UP FOR WORK AT 04:30 AM,..I HAVE BEEN TRYING TO SPIN MY CLOTHS OUT FOR HOURS. THE REPAIR MAN LEFT AT 06:30 AND ASSURED ME IT WOULD BE FINE THIS TIME. HE HAS BEEN HERE TO FIX THE WASHER THREE TIMES IN THE PAST THREE WEEKS. NEEDLES TO SAY WE DO NOT HAVE A WORKING WASHER,..AGAIN! BLEHHHH,..IT CONSTANTLY FILLS WITH WATER AND NEVER SPINS OUT,..WE NOW HAVE A HUGE WATER BILL. THE REPAIR PERSON REPLACED THE MAIN BOARD, THE TUB AND HOUSING UNIT, RPLACED THE PUMP AND TODAY HE REPLACED THE CLUTCH ASSEMBLY. HE DID A TEST RUN WITHOUT ANY CLOTHING IN THE MACHINE, THEN LEFT.
HE ASSURED US THE PROBLEM WAS FIXED,..I’M CONVINCED I HAVE A LEMON,…OR A REPAIR PERSON WHO IS CLUELESS,….OR WE GOT SCREWED BY SAMSUNG

We purchased the samsung washing machine model wa456 in April 2013 because our washing machine also broke after 15+ years.  We had the water flood from the bottom of the machine and found out that the pump bracket broke and now waiting on the replacement part.  All the comments I have read I found absolutely true that the machine does not clean your clothes, there are sometimes dry spots on the clothes, and the machine does rattle /shake with a loud noise.  We purchased our machine from Lowe’s.  Thanks for the great reviews now we know what else to look out for should we need to replace this.   BrendaA

LeAn Bortvit says:

I agree wholeheartedly with Yolanda’s comments. This washer does not fill with enough water. My clothes over a period of a year have gotten dingier all the time. I DO NOT like this washer, and am completely unhappy with it. My old washer was very, very old and finally gave out on me. It washed my clothes 10 times better than this new samsung. I never had problems getting my clothes clean before. No stains, whites came out white. Those days are long gone now. Oh and from day one, the fabric softener dispenser never worked. I would pour it in the dispenser, and it would run right back out. Every.single.time. I DO NOT recommend the Samsung top load washer.

Stacy Nelson says:

mine wont come out of demo mode or something???? i will be putting the old trusty back in.

Alexis Timmons says:

This washer creates staines on my clothes instead of washing ugh!!!

Ann-Mary Caetano says:

Is there a filter to be cleaned? Where is it located?

There is a class action lawsuit to the faulty part in question that floods everyones house eventually.

John Wrubel says:

Ugh. Ours is only a few years old, and it’s constantly displaying a DC code?

David Raimundo says:

I have a WA400PJHDWR/AA Top loader bottom line! They suck A$$ My washer nearly flooded my house six months after purchasing it at Lowes. That repair took nearly 1 1/2 months. By the 1 year 1month birthday it started giving me dc codes (now its out of warranty) F….ing great! I can’t get sh!t done because all of the dc codes. Now I spend my weekends at the Laundromat and don’t try and send me to no video on how to correctly load my washer. Don’t waste your money or you will get screwed like I did. Maybe I can scrap this crap for $$.

Jesus Rivera says:

looking to buy a new washing machine anybody know a good one? because this one from the review is total crap. i dont want to buy another nightmare… thanks

Thomas Ebbing says:

By far the biggest turd I’ve ever owned.  Bought washer/dryer brand new from Lowes.  The very night we brought it home, the display on the washer stopped working.  Called Lowes and they made it good.  9-10 months into it, the pump went out.  The dryer only works on timed dry or it runs forever.  Today, washer has 4-5 dress shirts in it and it keeps error-ing out.  Want some advice?  If you’ve already bought a Samsung brand, take it back to the store or do your best to pawn it off on someone who likes to work on appliances all the time.

Jennifer Fox says:

Not a fan of this washer at all.  The pump has broken, which flooded my floor.  And now the clips or wire that hold the drum in place has broken 3 times in the last 2 months, less than 2 months.  We purchased this washer on 11/10/2012.  No a happy customer right now.  It also doesn’t help that I am a mother of 2 extremely busy boys that are in multiple sports, so the laundry never stops in my house.  So, each time it breaks down, I am out of business with a load of water and soaking wet clothes each time.  Again, not happy at all.

Mark Jordan says:

We bought the SAMSUNG model WA456DRHDWR (similar to this one) in 2013 and it went bad in 3 years. Started to actually rust at the body where you put in the soap and ruined clothes. Then all the cycles got screwed up and will run over and over 2 or 3 times for like 90 minutes total. Uses water like crazy. Do not buy a SAMSUNG washer please. The SPIN only cycle does a rinse and spin. Idiotic. You cant even use half the cycles becasue they simply wont work as designed. And it does go off balance all the time no matter how you adjust the level. My wife is furious. Paid $731 for this thing.

LGwasherFan says:

yes. yes they do

marilaine faria says:

I hate mine. It doesn’t clean at all and the clothes smells really bad, I’m missing my LG so bad.

Lucky BUG says:

I have the same washer and I always wonder how the clothes at the top gets clean. i have watched it being washed before and the clothes at the top just sits there. I just stop thinking about it or ill go crazy. after 2 years, the plastic pump at the bottom broke and flooded my laundry room. my husband put it back using zip ties. 🙁

C. K. says:

Samsung is being sued for their faulty drain pumps that cause flooding.  See the following article:   http://topclassactions.com/lawsuit-settlements/lawsuit-news/55509-judge-keeps-samsung-fraud-charges-over-faulty-washing-machines/       The law firm is listed in the article, and their website states:  Nagel Rice has a pending class action lawsuit involving Samsung top load washing machines  manufactured with defective drain pumps and drain pump housings and mounts which break resulting in leaks or flooding in the home. These flimsy plastic parts were installed on several different models at least through the end of December 2012.  If you are a consumer who has purchased model WA400, WA422, WA456 or any other models and have experienced these problems, please call us.

Solomon Greatness says:

I had it for a year. It has been working very well since then. There was no any specific problem except that the drain hose has been put too deep in the the drain pipe by the installer which causes siphon phenomenon which give an “nF” error. So, I had to re-adjust the height of the hose by myself. After that it works great for me. I guess I am just lucky and my house has only 2 people so the washing machines has always been lightly used. 🙂

Laszlo Saurus says:

Still running great with no issues whatsoever. And we do a lot of laundry.

Chris Smith says:

Sorry to see you bought a samsung washing machine..word of advise.. get rid of it before your warranty is up..and hopefully you bout the extended warranty..because my experience is that it’s the biggest P.O.S ever. i bought mine in 2013, 1st warranty repair 3 months later, 2rd 6 months later, 3rd 3 months later and now on the 4th repair..piece of junk, and my opinion, no mfg should of removed the center agitator. it serves several benefits. I’m dealing with lowes extended warranty and it’s a joke.. trying to lemon law this POS and no luck. never buying samsung again..

Rob Klein says:

do not buy, this is a maintenance nightmare.

TNTony says:

Thank you for posting this great review.  I spoke with a Home Depot sales rep today about this unit at length.  I’m wondering if you have done a review of the matching dryer?  What are your thoughts on the dryer?

Mark Bielaga says:

I too have a Samsung WA456 washer. Best washing performance I’ve ever experienced in a washer I’ve owned. Bought it in March of 2013. Reliability wise, I’ve had no trouble with the electronics or mechanicals of the machine. HOWEVER, the tub cover gasket has FAILED 4 TIMES. What happens when it fails is when it goes into the Aquajet mode, the water that is supposed to get redirected to the clothes ends up on the floor. They do not make just the gasket, they have to replace the tub cover. Since the machine is now out of extended warranty, I would be the one repairing it. I will use permatex silicone gasket maker. They no longer offer aquajet on their new machines. (I wonder why?). The machine severely rusted under the soap dispenser, by the bleach cup, and the bottom of the door. It actually rusted through above the soap dispenser. I fought with Best Buy tooth and nail to get this replaced by Best Buy’s protection plan. They kept insisting that it was cosmetic. No, it was dropping rust particles into the washer. Let’s not forget the recall. So, after all that, would I buy a Samsung washer again? Yes I would. The electromechanical reliability is VERY GOOD. Just some buggy things they’ve had to work out.

bullsbearspigs says:

Great washer. Highly recommended unless youre a dummy or a hillbiilly with a pack of brats

Mark Z. says:

The drain pump broke on mine. It is 16 months old. When this happens, the drain tube on the bottom disconnects letting all the water out of the washer. If this happens while it is filling, it will continue to fill running water out on your floor. Eventually the electronics will give you a ‘nf’ error, meaning ‘not filling’. By then, if yours is on the second floor like ours was, your drain pain is draining as fast as it can, but, the water coming in will over flow the pan and run thru your home.  I’m a very happy customer of Samsung….NOT!

AAHH KILLER WASHING MACHINE!!

yambo59 says:

Samsungs like this one have been the cause of massive lawsuits and recalls, if I were you I wouldn’t be in the same room when it spins, if that thing fails and explodes it can send shrapnel out at high velocity over 150 G’s and do serious damage.
