Before you buy a refrigerator

Determining the right size fridge is more than just the space inside the fridge. There are a number of important things to consider regarding how your fridge will fit in your home and integrate into your kitchen. Here, Grand Appliance and TV Racine Manager, Kevan Haarsma, reviews some things to think about before you purchase your next refrigerator.

Peter Ecos says:

Good advice, I’d only add that if you go with the counter depth option, you make sure you measure the amount of space the doors will take when they swivel. In our case, the counters have a lip and unless we get a narrower fridge (less than 35 inches) the door don’t fully open -big problem!
How to measure the swivel space? When you go to the appliance store, pull out the fridge you are interested in (as most likely it is sandwiched between adjacent units), and with a tape measure (rigid), once you open the door, at the max comfortable and practical open angle, measure the distance between the side of the fridge and the outside edge of the door (the edge that is closest to you when you stand in front of it). Add the same measurement for the other side and you have the extra space that you will need. Add that to the width of the fridge and you have the total width space required to fit that particular unit.
